The first three-dimensional mammogram device was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on last Friday, February 11, 2011. The first X-ray mammography device has a three-dimensional image for proper screening and diagnosis for breast cancer.

According to Kristin Byrne, a chief of breast imaging for New York’s Lenox Hill Hospital a three-dimensional mammogram technology can help the women to satisfy the result. And about 10% of their first set of mammograms is not clear enough and require for a follow-up screening, by this first 3D mammogram device approved by FDA it will be lessen the effort of the patient and may help physicians more accurately detect and diagnose breast cancer.

The Selenia Dimensions System, marketed by Hologic Inc. of Bedford, Mass., was approved by the FDA which produces both conventional digital 2-D mammography images and 3-D images, and additionally that 3-D images be taken in tandem with 2-D images.

“Physicians can now access this unique and innovative 3-D technology that could significantly enhance existing diagnosis and treatment approaches,” said Dr. Jeffrey Shuren, director of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health.

There are lots of women who are suffering from breast cancer which has been increasing as a serious problem these days. Now you do not need to take stress further as this disease is curable. There is a treatment known as diagnostic mammography which is generally applied for women suffering from breast cancer. There are some symptoms when doctors recommend this treatment for women are as follows:

Generally there are lumps found in the breast or under arms and moreover there are changes found in skin colors like redness. Sometimes you may also come across with thickness changes found in nipple including erosion, itching, retraction etc. There may be changes in breast size such as discharge of nipples suddenly.

Besides all these symptoms, this treatment is also recommended for those who have been undergoing with any changes or abnormality on screening mammogram. Women who are facing any problem on screening mammogram are also advised for the treatment that has followed radiation therapy soon after lumpectomy first seven years.

There is a specific procedure of diagnostic mammography which begins with taking standard full sized image of breast with CC or craniocaudal. After that there is a procedure for the same treatment which is concerned with capturing side-to-side image of breast under MLO or mediolateral oblique. These are the two methods which are necessary to make out the condition of the patient. This treatment helps you in finding out morphology details, exact appearance and calcification details which are obtained through the combination of small quantity of compressions paddles with magnification technique. This technique is helpful in making out the exact picture of calcification found in females who are suffering from breast cancer or women who can suffer from this disease in future.

Micro calcification is said to be the medical term which can be considered as the initial stage of breast cancer in women. An experienced radiologist plays a vital role in diagnostic mammography as he is the only person who goes through the details and determines the result and present condition of the women suffering from breast cancer.

Although the exact causes of breast cancer have yet to be identified, the risk increases gradually with age and for certain people there may be a family hereditary (genetic) component. Other risk factors may include a long menstrual cycle, early onset of menses, or late menopause; first pregnancy after age 31 ; a high-fat diet; endometrial or ovarian cancer; radiation exposure; estrogen therapy; antihypertensive therapy; alcohol and tobacco use; and preexisting fibrocystic disease. The recent discovery of the breast cancer gene BRCA 1 confirms the theory that the disease can be inherited from either the mother or the father. About half of all breast cancers develop in the upper outer quadrant. Growth rates vary. Theoretically, slow-growing breast cancer may take up to 8 years to become palpable at 3/8 “(1 cm). It spreads by way of the lymphatic system and the bloodstream through the right side of the heart to the lungs and to the other breast, chest wall, liver, bone, and brain. Signs and Symptoms Early detection and treatment are extremely important in curing breast cancer.”diagnosis: a preface to an autopsy”

“Being a reporter is as much a diagnosis as a job description” The warning signs and symptoms of breast cancer could include the following: Change in the size or shape of the breast Lump or thickening of tissue in the breast or armpit Dimpled or pulling of the skin over the breast Nipple discharge Retraction of the nipple Scaliness of the nipple Pain or Tenderness Abnormality on a mammogram Diagnostic tests Mammography, the essential test for breast cancer, can reveal a tumor that is too small to palpate. Fine-needle aspiration and excisional biopsy provide cells for histologic examination to confirm the diagnosis. Ultrasonography can distinguish between a fluidfilled cyst and a solid mass. Chest X-rays can pinpoint metastases in the chest. Scans of the bone, brain, liver, and other organs can detect distant metastases. Laboratory tests, such as alkaline phosphatase levels and liver function, can uncover distant metastases. Hormonal receptor assay can determine whether the tumor is estrogen or progesterone-dependent. This test guides decisions to use therapy that blocks the action of the estrogen hormone that supports tumor growth. Treatment The choice of treatment usually depends on the stage and type of disease, woman’s age and menopausal status, and disfiguring effects of surgery. Therapy may include any combination of surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and hormone therapy. Surgery includes lumpectomy, partial mastectomy, simple or total mastectomy, modified radical mastectomy, and radical mastectomy. Lumpectomy. (say: lum- pek -tuh-mee), which removes the cancerous tumor from the breast. A woman usually has this surgery when the cancer is found early and when the lump is small and in only one part of the breast. Partial mastectomy (also known as segmental mastectomy or quadrantectomy) removes one-quarter or more of the breast. Simple or total mastectomy is the removal of the breast but not the lymph nodes or pectoral muscles. Modified radical mastectomy is the removal of the breast and some of the axillary lymph nodes. Radical mastectomy is the removal of the breast, pectoralis major and minor, and axillary lymph nodes. The use of this surgery has declined. Before or after tumor removal, primary radiation therapy may be effective for a patient who has a small tumor in early stages without distant metastases. Radiation therapy can also prevent or treat local recurrence. Preoperative breast irradiation also helps to sterilize the field, making the tumor more manageable surgically, especially in inflammatory breast cancer. Various cytotoxic drug combinations may be administered either as adjuvant therapy or as primary therapy. The patient may base her decision to undergo chemotherapy on several factors, including the cancer’s stage and hormonal receptor assay results. Chemotherapy commonly relies on a combination of drugs, such as cyclophosphamide, fluorouracil, methotrexate, doxorubicin, vincristine, paclitaxel, and prednisone. A typical regimen is cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, and fluorouracil; it’s used in premenopausal and postmenopausal women. Hormonal therapy lowers levels of estrogen and other hormones suspected of nourishing breast cancer cells. For example, antiestrogen therapy (specifically tamoxifen, which is most effective against tumors identified as estrogen receptor-positive) is used in postmenopausal women. Breast cancer patients may also receive estrogen, progesterone, androgen, or antiandrogen aminoglutethimide therapy. The success of these therapies provides growing evidence that breast cancer is systemic, not local, and has led to decline in ablation surgery. Prevention Doctors and scientists are working on finding cures for all types of breast cancer. They are researching new medicines that may even help prevent the disease. But in the meantime, it’s important for women to catch the disease early. Regular mammograms – together with monthly breast self-exams – are the best ways for women to protect themselves. You may want to ask the women you care about if they are taking these important steps.

Every woman out there over the age of 40 should take time from their busy schedules to call about a mammogram. It is that important. This doesn’t mean you should also skip performing self-examinations, too. If you find a lump or mass, never wait for your yearly test and get one right away under a mammography workstation.

A recent study has shown only around 10% of women who have found a mass will need a biopsy done, and of those 10%, only a fifth will actually be cancer. This positive news means only one or two mammograms from PACS workstations out of every thousand lead to a correct and often life-saving cancer diagnosis. It is better to have caught it in its early stages with a mammography viewer for the best long term treatment options.

A mammography workstation uses mammography, a specially designed x-ray image which displays any changes and growths within the breast. Your breast is compressed in the x-ray machine and pacs viewer images are taken of at least two different angles in order to get the best possible view. There two different types of a mammography viewer. These would be the screening mammograms and the diagnostic mammograms. Screening mammograms are from side to side and top to bottom while diagnostic mammograms centralize the images on a specific area.

Both can be displayed used either a pacs web viewer or PACS workstations. A mammography viewer should be part of every yearly physical for women. These exams are important not only because they screen for obvious cases breast cancer but also ones that cannot be detected with a mammogram. Every woman should begin self examinations at the age of twenty and once a month so that if there are any changes in your breast tissue, it will be easier to tell what is normal and what is not. Spotting an abnormality on a mammography workstation or PACS web viewer does not necessarily mean you have cancer. Your doctor will conduct further tests if an abnormality is found on any PACS workstations. A biopsy of the abnormality is also done to confirm if the cells are cancerous.

A mammography workstation is easily a woman’s best weapon against deadly breast cancer. The mammography viewer shows health professionals of any changes, both big and small, in the breast tissue at early stages when it is much more treatable. Lumps can be spotted before they are even able to be felt in a manual breast exam. An annual breast mammogram increases the rate of breast cancer survival. If you are over 40 and haven’t had a mammogram yet, it is strongly recommend that you schedule one right away. Make this one date you do every year.

A health-conscious person who hardly got sick and regularly observed breast health care measures, Nina Hughes Anderson never suspected she would be diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer (IBC), which is a very rare yet aggressive type of the disease.

In the self-published book “The Bumble Bee Miracle: a Story of Survival from Inflammatory Breast Cancer”, Anderson reveals through her experience why many women affected with inflammatory breast cancer do not survive this disease. She also narrates how this dreadful illness can be prevented.

Anyone can be a victim of breast cancer. Surprisingly, some types of breast cancer do not appear on a mammogram and it is possible that one can get breast cancer even without spotting a lump.

Anderson believes that no woman should go through the same horrible experience she had with inflammatory breast cancer. Through her miraculous survival and her self-published release, she hopes to educate and encourage women about the symptoms of IBC as well as ways to cope with the disease and keep IBC at bay.

Symptoms and Complications
The appearance of a lump or mass in the breast is found 9 times out of 10 during a self examination. There is usually no pain, but the mass may cause an unusual sensation in the place where it is located.

When a tumour appears in the milk ducts, bleeding can occur from the nipple. The size or shape of the breast may change. In addition, the nipple may enter into or skin may shrink, causing the formation of a dimple. The appearance of a lump or swelling in the armpit, or a redness or swelling of the breast are other symptoms.

While these might be early signs of breast cancer but may also indicate another non-cancerous. In fact, about 8 out of 10 are not cancerous. It should however consult a doctor to pinpoint the exact cause of the hump.

The most serious complication of breast cancer metastasis. Metastases occur when some cells from a tumour break off and travel to other parts of the body via the blood or lymphatic vessels to invade tissue in locations distant sometimes. When metastases are formed from cells of breast cancer, they are most often in lymph nodes, lungs, liver, bones, brain and skin. Several years may pass – even after the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer – before the cancer that has spread from the primary tumour.

When metastases are discovered, the cancer has probably already spread to other places, even if these tumours are not detected.

Diagnosis
It must be checked by your doctor a suspicious mass in your breast. Besides a complete physical examination, the doctor will also perform a mammogram, which is to say at a low dose X-rays may show abnormalities in the breast. An ultrasound can sometimes be performed to determine if the lump is a fluid-filled cyst or a solid mass. A biopsy may be necessary even if the lump tactile does not appear on the mammogram.

Fluid may be collected in a cyst with a needle to determine if it contains cancer cells. A solid mass should be analyzed under a microscope. To this end, we must perform a needle biopsy, a core biopsy or surgical biopsy.

In the case of needle biopsy, a thin needle is inserted into the lump to extract cells. Core biopsy involves removing a sample of breast tissue and cells to examine. The biopsy involves removing the entire mass and a certain amount of healthy tissue nearby. This procedure is performed under local or general anaesthesia.

Cancer cells may be subjected to examination to detect the presence of oestrogen receptors or progesterone. In addition, we may conduct further tests – including radiography, bone scan, ultrasound, computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging – to see if the cancer has spread to other organs or tissues.
