CME: Advances in the Prevention, Diagnosis and Treatment of Breast and Gynecologic Cancers


City of Hope’s Robert J. Morgan, Jr., MD, FACP, introduces City of Hope’s Continuing Medical Education e-Learning series, “Advances in the Prevention, Diagnosis and Treatment of Breast and Gynecologic Cancers”. Breast cancer remains the most frequently diagnosed solid tumor and second leading cause of cancer death in US women. If these rates continue, a female child born today will have about a 1 in 8 chance of developing breast cancer at some point during her life. Greater public awareness of signs and symptoms have increased early diagnosis, breast cancer treatment is still dependent on clinical factors such as stage, histology, HER-2 and hormonal status. It is estimated that 20 million Americans may have the human papillomavirus (HPV). Yet more than 76 percent of US women have never heard of this sexually transmitted virus which causes nearly all cervical cancers. Women who are not diagnosed with cervical cancer through screening typically present with advanced disease. In 2010, the NCI placed the number of newly diagnosed cases of cervical cancer at 12000 with related deaths at 4000. The scientists and clinicians at City of Hope have a long history of developing and advancing new techniques to screen for, diagnose and treat gynecologic and breast cancers. Breast cancer patient receives rapid diagnosis and treatment at Breast Health Center


In February 2009 Danielle Horsley discovered a suspicious mass in her right breast. Within 24 hours of discovering the lump in her breast, her gynecologist referred her to a team of specialists at the Shands Jacksonville Advanced Breast Imaging Center located in Jacksonville, Florida.
