How Effective Is Chemotherapy Procedure For Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer occurs on the breast tissue due to uncontrollable growth of cells. This can either be in the inner lining of the milk ducts. This type of cancer normally affects elderly women although there are cases where it affects men and young women. The most notable sign of the disease is the formation of a lump in the breast. Other signs include a change in the size or shape of the breast or discharge from the nipples. These signs are noted during a self-exam. However, one needs to see a doctor for further tests in order to tell whether the lump is malignant or benign.
There are different types of treatment that one can receive after being diagnosed with cancer. These include, surgery (lumpectomy or mastectomy), radiation, hormonal therapy, target therapy and chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is the use of drugs or combination of drugs to stop the growth of cancer cells. The drug or drugs used depend on the type of cancer and the extent to which it has spread. In addition, this method of treatment can be used in cases where surgery is not an option or possible. The treatment is sometimes given to help reduce the size of the tumor. This is done so that the tumor can easily be removed.
Chemotherapy is effective in breast cancer treatment because, it can help remove a tumor or control its growth. It is also useful in reducing the pain associated with the disease. Chemotherapy drugs can be administered orally or intravenously. This drugs cause side effects because, they end up destroying even the normal cells. This problem is however temporary as the normal cells usually repair themselves some time after the treatment is stopped. Other effects of these drugs include; nausea, fatigue, hair loss, constipation and diarrhea. The severity of effects caused by this treatment can however be reduced through the use of some prescription drugs.
Due to these side effects that end up affecting the whole body, more people are opting to have the treatment administered directly to the affected cancerous site. However, to reach this decision you have to consult with your doctor who will advise you depending on your individual case, other related illnesses, the type of drugs to be used and the stage the cancer has reached. Many patients have benefited from this treatment since, it has proved effective in destroying cancerous cells and in managing existing tumors.

Treadmill Desks More Effective in Decreasing Prostate Cancer Risks Than Vitamin and Antioxidant Supplements
On the heels of announcements two weeks ago that vitamin supplements A thru E were found ineffective in preventing various forms of cancers come two more medical announcements with the same conclusions regarding prostate cancer. While supplementation strategies have been shown conclusively to fail in this regard long standing studies have proven that a regimen of daily walking is effective in lowering the risk of prostate cancer.
The National Cancer Institute states that regular walking will reduce the risk of prostate cancer by 10% to 30% and that sedentary lifestyles greatly increase the risk of developing this disease. Obese men are much more likely to die from from prostate cancer further indicating the importance of exercise and weight management. With more than 50% of the adult male population bound to desk jobs that prevent adequate daily exercise the challenge is finding a means of invoking exercise into the work day. Treadmill desks offer a solution that merits serious consideration.
Treadmill desks allow employees to walk at slow speeds (without sweating) and perform all of the tasks they complete at a regular desk. Some of the benefits of walking during the day on a treadmill desk include:

* increased levels of productivity and concentration
*improvements in overall mood
* increased cognitive function
* weight loss
* disease prevention
The 12 year study out of the University of Texas involved 50,000 men analyzing the benefits of Selenium and Vitamins E supplementation was halted prematurely when it was discovered that they offered absolutely no benefit to prostate cancer prevention. Additionally, a study by Harvard scientists following 14,641 doctors aged 50 and over proved ineffective when testing the effects of Vitamin C and E on prostate cancer prevention.
Not only were supplements shown as an ineffective substitute for a healthy diet but there is a risk they may have a detrimental effect on the body according to Dr. Jodie Moffat from the Cancer Research Center UK, “supplements don’t substitute for a healthy diet and some studies have shown that they may actually increase the risk of cancer.”
Walking has also been shown previously to have a statistically significant impact on the prevention of colon, prostate and breast cancers along with a multitude of other major diseases. It appears that Hippocrates was right, walking truly is man’s best medicine.

Tamoxifen Effective In Curing Breast Cancer
Tamoxifen, known in the trade as Nolvadex, is usually prescribed by specialists in breast cancer and is taken in pill form. A patient will stay on the drug for about five years.
Often the woman’s cancer will be tested to see if it is sensitive to the amount of oestrogen in the system. If the cancer is oestrogen sensitive, tamoxifen will be given.
Because tamoxifen is such a weak estrogen, its estrogen signals don’t stimulate very much cell growth. And because it has stolen the place away from more powerful estrogen, it blocks estrogen-stimulated cancer cell growth. In this way, tamoxifen acts like an “anti-estrogen.”
Tamoxifen may also take the place of natural estrogen in the receptors of healthy breast cells. In that way it holds down growth activity, and possibly stops abnormal growth and the development of a totally new breast cancer. By blocking natural estrogen from getting to the receptors, tamoxifen is helpful in reducing the risk of breast cancer in women at high risk who have never had breast cancer. It also can help women who have already had breast cancer in one breast by lowering the risk of a new breast cancer forming in the other breast.
One study found that radiation plus tamoxifen was much better than tamoxifen alone at reducing the risk of breast cancer coming back after a lumpectomy in women with hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer. This was true even for women with very small cancers.
For pre-menopausal women, tamoxifen is the best hormonal therapy. But tamoxifen is no longer the first choice for post-menopausal women. If you’ve been on tamoxifen for two to three years and now you’re in menopause, your doctor may recommend that you switch to an aromatase inhibitor to finish your five years of hormonal therapy. However, you can still get a lot of benefit if you take tamoxifen for up to five years and then switch to an aromatase inhibitor.
Tamoxifen was first used to fight breast cancer at the Christie Hospital in Manchester, England, in 1969. It has since proved its worth as means of stopping the spread or recurrence of the disease in women who have already been treated for it.
But, it was noticed back in the early 1980s that some women who were receiving the drug for cancer in one breast did not develop any tumorous growth in the other. This prompted the suggestion that Tamoxifen might have another preventative role for those women who are at risk of getting breast cancer but have yet to develop any signs of the disease.
