Doctors divided on using body fat for breast implants
NEW ORLEANS — Transferring fat from one area to another has been done for years, to plump up sunken in faces and lips and hands thinned by sun, or to round out a flat buttocks. But transferring fat to the breasts rather than using implants has been controversial. But doctors are getting closer. It was over two years ago when we first brought up the issue. Could women safely do liposuction on …

Breast Implants and Cancer
While many people are concerned about media reports claiming that there is a link between breast implants and cancer, these claims are being disproven by recent studies.
For example, in a large study conducted by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), researchers found no correlation between silicone-filled breast implants and the risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer. Silicone implants were banned by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1992 after questions arose concerning the safety of silicone leakage into the body. The NCI study, however, revealed no increased cancer risk from silicone implants. This good news is the first part of an intensive analysis conducted by the United States Congress to evaluate the long-term effects of silicone implants on women’s health.
The study was conducted by having researchers analyze medical records and data from over 13,000 women who had breast implant surgery for cosmetic reasons between the time silicone implants entered the market and 1989. These women were compared to the general population and to women who had received other types of plastic surgery.
Significantly, the study found that in those women followed for more than 10 years, there was no change in breast cancer risk.
The NCI study is one of the largest studies on the long-term health effects of silicone breast implants ever conducted. Its results were a sigh of relief for women who had received implants and those cosmetic surgeons who had seen with their own eyes the benefits such surgery had had on their patients.
However, it also bears noting that x-rays used for mammograms cannot penetrate silicone or saline implants distinctly enough to fully image the underlying breast tissue. This means that cancer may be more difficult to detect in women at an earlier age. Accordingly, in order to minimize this risk, cosmetic surgeons recommend that women with implants undergo diagnostic mammography instead of screening mammography on a regular basis to achieve additional and deeper mammography views.
Millions of women have had breast implant surgery since implants first appeared on the market in 1962. The NCI statistics show that approximately 80% of women get breast implants for cosmetic reasons while 20% get implants to reconstruct their breasts after breast cancer surgery. Before silicone breast implants were banned, over 90% of implants were silicone implants, since silicone was, and is, thought to cause a more natural appearance, shape and feel than saline implants.
While there is much controversy surrounding silicone breast implants, many experienced cosmetic surgeons doubt silicone implants cause or contribute to any significant medical disease, including cancer. On the contrary, they appear to offer substantial benefits, both aesthetically and mentally, for the women who choose to have them.

Exercises For Implants – A Breast Implant and Its Maintenance
Regular maintenance (exercise-healthy diet) is the key to a well body as you found before you had your implants done. You hold got the job done hard to reach your exemplary image so you can make out what it is all about. Regular check-ups help to continue you healthy general and now that you have implants, it in addition needs to be considered. Since not all surgeons agree on the subject of pocket quadrant exercises or implant massage compressions, you should ask your board certified surgeon about these exercises. Since capsular contracture is one of the most common side effects, let’s look at what it is. To understand it, let’s look at the body’s reaction to a foreign object. Exercises For Implants
When a foreign object is implanted, the human body immediately begins to encase the foreign object by creating a capsule of fibrous tissue to protect the body from the foreign object. The reaction is the same whether the foreign object is something medically implanted such as a breast implant or accidentally implanted like stepping on a thorn. Capsular contracture is when that fibrous tissue that is surrounding your implant begins to tighten and contract. Sometimes the contraction is minor and unnoticeable or it can be extreme with pain and distortion. There is no long term data to show who or what type of breast implant will have capsular contracture.
The idea behind the pocket quadrant exercises and massage compressions is to keep the pocket your implant is in, roomy and the capsule loose and elastic to possibly prevent capsular contracture. Remember, not all surgeons suggest this, so check with them before you do these. If your surgeon suggests this type of exercise, he will also tell you when to start it, following surgery, how often and for how long. A general overview of the pocket quadrant exercises is that it involves moving your implant to the top of the pocket and holding for a few seconds. This is repeated downward and left/right. Compression of the implant itself should only be done with the guidance of your surgeon. Exercises For Implants
A baseline mammogram should be done before breast augmentation so that, later it can be compared for any kind of changes. The risk of breast cancer does not go away because you have received implants, so regular self examination is important. Your surgeon will guide you on how to perform a self examination so you can tell the difference between your breast tissue and the implant. The manufacturers of all implants licensed in the United States recommend follow up mammograms and stress on the necessity of making sure that the technician doing it is aware of your implants.
There are special techniques used to get the views, necessary to tell the difference between breast tissue and implant. Mammography is still the best way to check breast tissue for abnormalities. MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) can be used to check for ruptured implants and the condition of the implants, as well as investigating questionable things on a mammogram. A MRI provides a three dimensional picture of the breast and implant.
An MRI without contrast (a liquid injected into the blood) will be able to tell what you need to know about your implants. If your breast tissue is in question, then contrast may be requested. The rule of thumb is, if you have silicone implants you should plan on a MRI for three years following implantation and then every two years. Were you a part of a implant study? Exercises For Implants
If so, make sure your mammogram/MRI results and reports are sent to them. It is important that the results are reported back to the manufacturers so they can be studied and tracked. Since each woman is unique, she should follow her surgeon’s advice regarding follow up tests and check ups. Breast Implants: Fact And Fiction
Is going bigger better? For many women the answer to this daunting question is a whooping, yes. Breast augmentation is surgery, and like every surgery it comes with its risks (www.fda.gov). Yet in spite of the price tag it carries, the potential complications and the possibility of revisional surgery, 95% of females who undergo breast augmentations are satisfied with their result.
In light of this vigorous demand for going bigger, I have compiled my own list of fact and
Fiction: on a procedure that has been with us for hundreds of years and has become a big part of our culture:
Fact: Breast augmentation is the most popular cosmetic procedure in the country. It ranks as the first in the top five cosmetic surgical procedures, with liposuction ranking as second.
Fiction: Any link between breast cancer and breast implants. A recent study in the Journal of National Cancer Institute showed that breast implants are not linked to an increased creased risk of breast cancer. The study also suggest that women with breast implants are less likely to get breast cancer due to the fact that they lead a healthier way of life, a factor that helps decrease their risk of breast cancer.
Fact: Women who undergo breast augmentation experience improved sexual satisfaction. This is a phenomenon that has been reported in almost 80% of women with breast implants. A significant improvement in sexuality has also been reported in women who did not have poor sexual functions prior to having breast augmentation.
Fiction: You can’t breast feed with breast implants. As a matter of fact if you have breast implants you should be happy to know that most likely you can still breast feed your baby. Although every woman is different, you have to first see if breastfeeding works for you. If it does, then breast implants and breast feeding has a lot to do with the manner in which the implants were placed. Most plastic surgeons adopt an approach to the placement of their incision resulting in little or less nerve or duct damage keeping your chances at breast feeding at a maximum.
Fact: The FDA has put restrictions on the age minimum for breast augmentation. Taking into consideration the fact that young women’s breast continue to develop through their teens, the FDA approved breast implants for augmentation in women ages 18 and older. Another contributing factor to setting an age minimum for acquiring breast implants is the concern for the degree of maturity required to make such an informed decision.
Fiction: Women opt to have a breast augmentation to please a partner. Studies show that very few women opt to have a breast augmentation to attract a partner while the most common reason women choose larger breast is for the sole purpose of feeling better about themselves and their bodies.
Fact: “Gummy Bear” implants are the new more cohesive silicone gel breast implants. Soon to be available at your plastic surgeon’s office, these implants will be launched by the two major breast implant manufacturers, Mentor and Allergan and are awaiting FDA approval. The gummy implants are filled with a cohesive firmer silicone gel that holds together uniformly, helps maintain the shape of the implant and has a feel similar to breast tissue.
Fiction: Breast implants last forever. Breast implants don’t last forever and if you have a breast augmentation chances are over your life time you will need additional surgeries. Regardless of whether you opted for saline or silicone implants, many factors can play a role in your need for further surgeries. Breast hardening, rippling, asymmetry to name a few or just plain poor cosmetic results contribute to the fact that breast implants don’t last forever.
Anecdotal Fact: Implants protect you from dying? There has been one reported case where a woman was shot in the chest but saved by her silicone implants. According to the treating doctor on the scene, the implants prevented the bullet from reaching a vital organ and causing serious damage to the victim.

I’m considering having a double mastectomy and then breast implants?
There’s an extremely high risk of breast cancer in my family. Every single female on my mother’s side including her have had breast cancer and then on my father’s side every other generation has it. I’ve been seriously researching this since I was 12 years old. Having all my tissue removed and then obviously have implants put it seems like the best option since I also have big boobs naturally (38 nearly D) that cause back pains and cause me to hunch. Is this a good option? I’ve researched it quite a bit and I’m 97% sure I’m going to go through with it once I’m 18 which I’m 17 now turning 18 August 1.
It’s almost a complete guarentee I will at some point since every female on my mother’s side has. Also, I would obviously HAVE to have implants if I had mastectomies.
