Genetic Disease Test Reports ? Should You Get One

Over the course of the past decade, broad new understandings have been acquired into genetic predispositions to a number of diseases. The fact is, that some people are born with a higher risk factor to some diseases then others. With this new knowledge new test methods have been developed to determine just who these people are.

The Choice is Yours

What this means is that you can now take a test to see if you are more vulnerable to such diseases as breast cancer than the person sitting next to you. So now the question is, should you take one of these expensive complex tests and if so, what will you do with the information that is contained in you test report?

Expensive and Vague

These comprehensive genetic profile test reports cost an average of around $1500 – $2000 and cover a number of diseases. However; they don’t offer precise probabilities. That is, they can’t tell you if you are going to or not going to come down with any of the diseases that they profile. They only tell you if you have a higher or lower probability of contacting them as compared to the population as a whole.

Is it Safe for You to Smoke Cigarettes?

Wouldn’t it be ironic if you drove to the lab, picked up your test report, read that you were at the lowest probability for all the diseases listed and were killed in a car wreck on your way home? On the other hand if your test report determined that you were at a low risk for lung cancer, does this mean that it is safe for you to smoke?

Test Report or Vacation the Choice is Yours

So the argument goes on, while the test reports keep being compiled. However; as one prominent doctor recently put it. If you care enough about your health to shell out $2000 for one of these reports, why not take that $2000 and go out and take a great vacation, because that will have a far greater positive impact on your general overall health.
