A complex mix of factors related to environment, lifestyle, and heredity plays a role in the causation of cancer. For example, 80 percent of all cancers are related to the use of tobacco products, to what we eat and drink, and to our exposure to radiation, asbestos, and some of the other cancer-causing agents. There’s not much you can do about your genes, but several other key risk factors are under your control. If you identify them and make the necessary changes in your lifestyle early enough, you can substantially decrease your chances of developing a malignancy. Here are some of the risk factors you can do something about:
1. Tobacco
Tobacco is the most preventable cause of mortality in this country. Regardless of whether you chew it, snuff it, smoke it, or inhale someone else’s exhaust, tobacco is a killer. In the United States, it is responsible for 85 to 90 percent of all lung cancers, and for one-third of all deaths related to other cancers. The magnitude of the risk depends on the number and kind of cigarettes you have smoked and for how long. A pack-a-day smoker is ten times more vulnerable than a non-smoker. It is never too late to quit. After you do, your cancer risk declines gradually each year.
2. Chronic alcohol abuse
This type of abuse can cause cancer of the liver, as well as of the mouth, throat, and larynx, especially in combination with tobacco. It may also raise the risk of breast cancer. If you are going to imbibe, limit yourself to the equivalent of two drinks a day – and stop smoking.
3. Diet
People who shun fruits and vegetables have roughly twice the incidence of most types of cancer – lung, larynx, oral cavity, stomach, colon, and rectum, bladder, pancreas, cervix, and ovary – than those with the highest intake. Yet only 9 percent of Americans heed the recommendations of the National Cancer Institute and the National Research Council to eat two servings of fruit and three portions of vegetables a day. Seventh-Day Adventists, who don’t drink or eat much meat but do consume a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, have the lowest incidence of cancer in the U.S. population. This protective effect is probably due to the antioxidants and folic acid present in fruits and vegetables, which neutralize damage to chromosomal DNA caused by oxygen-free radicals.
4. A high-fat diet
This type of diet is associated with cancer of the breast, uterus, and prostate. The guilty foods are eggs, fatty meat, high-fat salad dressings and cooking oils, and diary products such as whole milk, butter, and most cheeses.
Blueberries have a higher antioxidant capacity than any other fruit or vegetable. They are said to protect against cancer by virtue of their anthocyanins and other natural phytochemicals.
5. A high consumption of soy-based food
Soy-based food such as tofu, may also protect against cancer because of the genistein content. Genistein suppresses the production of proteins that cancer cells need in order to keep growing. In China and Japan, where people eat lots of soy, there is much less cancer of the breast, colon, and prostate than in this country. Since men with prostate cancer generally have lower blood levels of selenium than their normal counterparts, selenium supplements may protect against this malignancy.
6. Some supplements
Some supplements seem to protect against certain cancers. For instance, colon polyps and cancer do not recur as often in persons who regularly take multivitamins, calcium supplements, and vitamin E. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables is protective against cancer, presumably because of the beta-carotene content. So take your mother’s advice: Eat all the fruits and vegetables you can – and forget the pills.
7. Don’t have X-rays
Don’t have X-rays any more frequently than is absolutely necessary. I no longer take annual routine chest films on myself. Some dentists are too enthusiastic about X rays. Make sure you really need them before acquiescing.

Anybody that has ever had cancer or knows somebody that has had it, or has a family member that has had cancer knows just how devastating and horrible it can be to the person who has it and everyone involved. Although there currently isn’t any known cure, anything that we can do to prevent cancer is very important, vitally so. In fact since there isn’t a cure, the only thing we can do is try to prevent it.
In this article today I’d like to give you several important tips for things that you can do to help prevent cancer in yourself.
One of the main areas to focus on is diet. Studies have shown that how we eat and what we eat is a major contributing factor to cancer prevention.
That means avoiding certain types of food if at all possible. Eating less dietary fat can definitely cut your cancer risk for things such as breast, colon, and also prostate cancers.
You should try to minimize the consumption of certain meats including beef, pork, and even poultry and fish.
You should also try to eat more vegetables and fruits but along with eating more of these things you should also be aware of how you prepare them. When it comes to preparation, it’s very important to wash your produce thoroughly as well.
Another important tip is to drink more water. Some studies have shown that drinking between 6 to 8 eight ounce glasses of water every single day does a good job helping to flush carcinogens out of your body which is very important to cancer prevention.
You should also try to consume as much dietary fiber is possible. This comes in the form of fresh fruits but also vegetables and whole grains. Fiber generally speeds that passage of feces through the intestines. This helps reduce the amount of time that those carcinogens stick around in your body which can only be a good thing.
Along with avoiding certain foods, it’s a good idea to add certain foods that are known to be good in the fight against cancer. When you come right down to it, almost all fruits and vegetables and grains are good for you and this area but some of them are even better than others.
These foods include onions and garlic as well as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and brussel sprouts. Nuts and seeds are especially good as well and whole grains; and tomatoes are great too.
So there you have several tips on how to prevent cancer that are fairly simple and straightforward and shouldn’t take too much effort on your part.

Of the many diseases that affect people these days, cancer is among the most feared. But despite a wealth of scientific data, most people remain unaware of how they can reduce their risk of developing cancer. All the evidence points to a low-fat, high-fiber diet that includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and beans, as being the best for cancer prevention. Not surprisingly, vegetarians, whose diets easily meet these requirements, are at the lowest risk for cancer.

These are the machines that produce the torque necessary to operate hand-pieces for drilling, buffing, polishing, and dental burs among other motor-driven devices. Dental supplies such as these allow the dentist to practice their skills to save teeth from the ravages of cavities and the wear and tear to which teeth fall victim to every day.

First the good news, your cancer risks are very low if you have a healthy lifestyle. As many as 70% of known causes of cancers are avoidable and related to lifestyle. Your first line of defense, as expected, is avoidance of tobacco products but recent research has uncovered many small, surprising ways you can reduce your cancer risks.
14 Ways To Reduce Your Cancer RisksFilter Your Tap Water – You’ll reduce your exposure to known or suspected carcinogens and hormone-disrupting chemicals. A new report from the President’s Cancer Panel on how to reduce your cancer risks suggests filtered tap water is a safer bet than bottled water.
Water Down Your Risks – Drinking plenty of water and other liquids may reduce the risk of bladder cancer by diluting the concentration of cancer-causing agents in urine and helping to flush them through the bladder faster.
Marinate Meat Before Grilling – Processed, charred, and well-done meats can contain cancer-causing heterocylic amines, which form when meat is seared at high temperatures, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which get into food when it’s charcoal broiled. If you do grill, add rosemary and thyme to your favorite marinade and soak meat for at least one hour before cooking. The antioxidant-rich spices can cut HCAs by as much as 87%.
Caffeinate Every Day – 5 or more cups of caffeinated coffee daily had a 40% decreased risk of brain cancer. It also reduces the risks of cancers of the pharynx and mouth almost as much.
Decaf had no comparable effect.
Load Up on Really Green Greens – Choose the darkest varieties. The chlorophyll that gives them their color is loaded with magnesium, which has been found to lower the risk of colon cancer in women. Just ½ cup of spinach provides 75 mg of magnesium (20% of the daily value).
Snack on Brazil Nuts – They’re a great source of selenium, an antioxidant that lowers the risk of bladder cancer in women. Other studies have found that people with high blood levels of selenium have lower rates of dying of lung and colorectal cancers. Researchers think selenium not only protects cells from free radical damage but may enhance immune function and suppress formation of blood vessels that nourish tumors.
Stop Topping Your Tank – The EPA and President’s Cancer Panel say pumping one last squirt of gas into your car after the nozzle clicks off can spill fuel and foil the pump’s vapor recovery system, which is designed to keep toxic chemicals out of the air.
Skip The Dry Cleaner – A solvent known as perc (short for perchloroethylene) that’s used in traditional dry cleaning may cause liver and kidney cancers and leukemia, according to an EPA finding backed in early 2010 by the National Academies of Science. The main dangers are to workers who handle chemicals or treated clothes using older machines, although experts have not concluded that consumers are also at increased cancer risk.
Find Out Your Breast Density – Women whose mammograms have revealed breast density readings of 75% or more have a cancer risk of 4-5 times higher than that of women with low density scores. One theory is that denser breasts result from higher levels of estrogen, making exercise particularly important.
Burn Off Breast Cancer Risk With Exercise – Moderate exercise, such as brisk walking 2 hours per week, cuts risk of breast cancer by 18%.
Head Off Cell Phone Risks – Use your cell phone only for short calls or texts, or use a hands-free device. The point is more to preempt any risk than to protect against a proven danger. Evidence that cell phones increase brain cancer is “neither consistent nor conclusive,” says the President’s Cancer Panel report.
Block The Sun With Color – Choosing your outdoor outfit wisely may help protect against skin cancer. Research has found that blue and red fabrics offered significantly better protection against the sun’s UV rays than white and yellow. And, don’t forget to wear a hat – although melanoma can appear anywhere on the body, its ‘more common in areas the sun hits.
Eat Clean Foods – the President’s Cancer Panel recommends buying mean free to antibiotics and added hormones, which are suspected of causing endocrine problems, including cancer. The report also advises that you purchase produce grown without pesticides or wash conventionally grown food thoroughly to remove residues. The foods with the most pesticides are celery, peaches, strawberries, apples, and blueberries.
Switch to Powerhouse Foods
Instead of carrots, eat sweet potatoes, which have double the beta-carotene.Instead of Oranges, eat papaya, which has 11 times more beta-cryptoxanthin.Instead of Spinach, eat cooked kale, which has 7 times the lutein/zeaxanthin.Instead of strawberries, eat raspberries, which have 3 times more elilagic acid.Instead of Broccoli, eat brussells sprouts, which contain 4 times more cancer-curbing compounds.Cancer risks are well documented on the internet and every other information source; i.e. keep alcohol intake to a minimum, exercise every day even if it’s just going for a walk, and meditate or find some other stress relief mechanism.
Do you love your breasts? Our fascination with the female breast is strong. They are the butt of many jokes, the desire of many men and their health the obsession of many women. The female breast is revered which most likely starts in infancy; after all it is also our first source of sustenance. This fact alone makes women’s breast health a number one concern for many. But do you love your breasts? Are they too big? Or maybe they are too small? Have they held up over time? Or do they need a little help? In many respects women’s breast health starts by first simply loving what you have.
Tips for women’s breast health include:
Practice monthly self breast exams. Gently massage the breast tissue looking for small, hard lumps that weren’t there the month before. If you find anything unusual, schedule a follow up with your doctor immediately.Visit your doctor regularly. Make sure to schedule your annual visit to the gynecologist for your regular check-up to complete your yearly pap smear and have a more thorough breast exam performed by your doctor.
Embrace the mammogram.
Don’t put it off, don’t be afraid. When it is your time for the mammogram, embrace it. There is no fooling, it will pinch, it will be uncomfortable, but it will be a lot quicker than you might expect and any discomfort will go away quickly. The above tips are all very important parts of every woman’s breast health plan. As easy as it is to get caught up in the aesthetics of your bust line; the pros and cons of plastic surgery, the latest and greatest in lingerie, make sure you love your breasts the best way you can and treat them to a regular check up.

Levels of hormones, primarily estrogen and progesterone, drop sharply in the hours after childbirth. This change may trigger depression in the same way that much smaller changes in hormone levels can trigger mood swings and tension before menstrual periods. Emotional factors affect a woman’s self-esteem and the way she deals with the stress and challenges of motherhood. This is thought to add to postpartum depression.
